Come with Kat as she goes to Cheskie’s Heimishe Bakery in Montreal’s Mile End neighborhood!

This bakery seems like it has always been around, but it was founded in 2002 by Cheskie Lebowitz after he moved to Montreal from Brooklyn to marry his wife Malky. After settling down, he decided to open a bakery that was the same as the one his brother opened in Borough Park, Brooklyn. But importantly, he named this one after himself!

They’re known for their babka and rugelach, but you don’t want to miss the cheese crowns or kokosh - a pastry known as babka’s Hungarian cousin that speaks to the family’s Hungarian roots.

Scenes from Shabbat dinner! Last night Kat & her family got together with friends to cook up a feast. The menu featured salad cuite, spicy muhammara, baba ganoush, a whole smoked cauliflower stuffed with kefta, smoked stuffed mushrooms & cabbage, harissa chicken (not pictured), and challah. We ended it all with a blood orange olive oil cake.

A Montreal Jewish food tour! Kat brought journalist @mpasanen to some of her favourite Jewish restaurants and bakeries around Montreal. They ate at 8 (!!) spots and by the end of it they definitely had to undo the button on their pants! But, it was so worth it.
Important note: Melissa had already eaten bagels and smoked meat which is why they don’t feature in the video, but of course they will be included in the final list!

Here’s a roundup of our little chews celebrating Purim! Featuring: a skeleton, Cookie Monster and a pirate hard at work making hamantaschen, Birdie sautéing some (Play-doh) hamantaschen, and Gabe enjoying a buckwheat & Nutella filled hamantaschen (which tasted great but weren’t pretty). Happy Purim from all the Chews, big and small ❤️

Kat is ringing in Purim with a dirty dill pickle martini! 🍸

Dirty dill pickle martini
1 oz gin
2 oz dry vermouth
0.5 oz dill pickle brine

Mix all ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake until cold and strain into a glass. Enjoy!
